Types of Motor Boat/ Cruiser

Whilst inevitably there is a great deal of variation and individual characteristic in motor-driven boat cruisers/yachts, these are normally categorised as listed below. For insurance purposes we tend to split these into day boats and cruisers (0-17 or 18-35 knots);

  • Cruising yacht: Cruising yachts provide full sleeping, galley and bathroom facilities to allow for cruising for extended periods.
  • Day cruiser: These have limited facilities to provide for day long cruising e.g. a sink and sometimes a stove or toilet.
  • Luxury cruiser/ yacht: A heavily equipped yacht, designed to luxuriously cater for the needs of those lucky enough to be able to take full advantage!
  • Fishing boat: A yacht designed with facilities specific to fully meeting the specialist needs of sports/ recreational fishing.
  • Weekend cruiser/ yacht: Similar to, but not quite as fully equipped as, a cruising yacht (1 perhaps 2 cabins, plus simple galley and bathroom facilities).

NB: Also see sailing yacht types for a list of the types of vessels that we insure e.g. ketch, schooner, sloop, yawl.
